Sounds, if produced at a certain frequency, have the ability to uplift your mood and improve your emotional and mental health. There has been a deep connection of sound with spiritual growth.

What is sound healing?

To understand what is sound healing, you need to first understand what is sound and how it is produced.

What is sound?

Sound is produced from vibrations. A vibrating object creates vibrations in the surrounding air molecules. This process initiates a chain reaction of vibrations in the environment which create sound.

What is vibration?

According to EarthSky.org

All things in our universe are constantly in motion, vibrating. Even objects that appear to be stationary are in fact vibrating, oscillating, resonating, at various frequencies. Resonance is a type of motion, characterized by oscillation between two states. And ultimately all matter is just vibrations of various underlying fields. As such, at every scale, all of nature vibrates.

How does sound influence you?

Sound has a very powerful influence in your life. You choose to listen to certain sounds and choose not to listen to certain others. Sound waves that are generated from vibrations reach your brains travelling through your ears trigger a natural response in your body.

This process further triggers the release of dopamine (known as “feel good hormone”) and oxytocin in your brain. Dopamine is the reason behind feelings of satisfaction and pleasure whereas oxytocin is known as a natural painkiller. This is why listening to music brings satisfaction and pleasure.

The great scientist, Albert Einstein, once said “Everything in life is vibration.” This is true. The entire universe is made up of vibrations. That means the sound energy is everywhere, some of which can be perceived by us, some cannot.

Sound influences us not just on a physical level, it deeply touches and transforms us on the emotional and spiritual planes.

The metaphysics of sound

The Big Bang theory says that a big explosion occurred that caused a huge sound and led to the creation of the entire universe. Sacred ancient scriptures of the Hindu mythology also mention that the “Aum” sound was generated first and then the universe got created. This means that the sound is the source of all creation. (mention that the universe was created as a result of the generation of the “Aum” sound. )

Sound healing

Sound healing can help you to become more aware of the sounds around you thereby leading to a more relaxed state of mind. When carried out routinely, you may begin to experience a calmer state of mind in your everyday life.

Sound healing provides remarkable results in those affected by injury, illness, disability, and for those with cognitive, emotional and other social needs.

How does it work?

Our body is made up with 70% of water so when we play the sounds in a particular way using specific instruments, the sound vibrations go through the body and vibrate the 70% of the water content.

The vibrations of that water content help in flushing out all the toxins in each cell of our body. That is why after each sound healing session one feels that stress is released from every cell, mind is relaxed and the body is highly rejuvenated. That is the power of the sound.

Let’s take an example of a guitar. If you keep playing the guitar for a prolonged duration, it goes out of tune. What do you do then? You re-tune the guitar in order to play it again.

Similarly, your body is just like a musical instrument. Every cell of each organ in your body is attuned to a particular sound frequency. And because of several reasons such as thoughts, emotions, feelings, stress, and daily activities, it eventually goes out of tune. In order to re-tune your body, you find different ways to relax yourself.

The Mozart Effect

The Mozart Effect refers to the theory that listening to the music of Mozart may temporarily boost scores on one portion of an IQ test.

The University of California, Irvine, carried out an experiment to study the effects of music on our cognitive function.

People were divided into 3 different groups prior to their IQ test questions. The first group of people listened to Mozart piano sonata for 10 minutes, the second group was asked to listen to a relaxation tape and the third group spent their 10 minutes in just silence.

The outcome was interesting. The group of people who listened to Mozart achieved the maximum score.

How does music help in enhancing cognitive performance?

According to Harvard Health — “It’s not clear, but the researchers speculated that listening to music helps organize the firing of nerve cells in the right half of the cerebral cortex, the part of the brain responsible for higher functions.”

It is not just Mozart, all types of music trigger the release of neurotransmitters (dopamine). Therefore, listening to music is believed to be the easiest way to boost your mood.

In fact, in our daily life also we find music the most helpful tool to regulate and diminish unpleasant emotional states.

Sound healing instruments

The sound healing is performed with instruments that are attuned to harmonic frequencies. When played in a particular way, it realigns the frequencies of our entire body to the natural healing frequencies.

These instruments create vibrations at different frequencies and they interact differently with our energy field. Some of them have the ability to resonate through our chakras while others can influence our aura.

Listed below are a number of instruments that are used to perform sound therapy.
